How do i operate my vehicle with an ignition interlock device installed?
  • Turn the ignition key to the ON (auxiliary power) position. DO NOT TURN THE KEY TO START POSITION AT THIS TIME. Make sure your mouthpiece is inserted into the Sample Head/breathalyzer.
  • The display indicates next service date/lockout date.
  • Wait until the display indicates “Test required, blow evenly.”
  • Take a deep breath and blow steadily until the unit produces a physical and audible “click.” (Usually about 1.5 – 2 seconds)
  • The display will the read “Analyzing Sample” and show a progress bar.
  • If you were successful and under BAC 0.025% then the display will read “Test Passed. Drive Carefully!” You have 2 minutes to start the vehicle.

If you were unsuccessful, the display may read “Blow test error, please try again.” This indicated that you did not blow hard enough or long enough to complete the test. You may immediately attempt another breath test.

After the vehicle has been running for a predetermined period, you will hear a beeping sound and the display will show “Please Blow/Rolling Test.” The display will also show a countdown indicating the amount of time you have left to complete the rolling retest (5 minutes). You must successfully deliver a breath sample in order to complete the test. The breath sample will be the same as with the initial test. The display will show “Analyzing Sample” and a progress bar. You will also receive one of the test result prompts described in the Test Result section of this manual.

Additional rolling retests will occur randomly during the operation of the vehicle in accordance with CA state regulations. If you miss or fail a rolling retest the unit WILL NOT stop your vehicle.

Even though our device is very easy to use in regards to rolling retests, it’s important to note per the DMV that when a rolling retest occurs, you should safely stop your vehicle at the side of the roadway to conduct the test; and then continue your travel once the test has been successfully completed.

***It’s important to note that we strongly encourage all of our clients that before taking a test make sure all food and other substances are completely out of your mouth. Clear your lungs several times. If needed, drink water before a test to assure that no foreign substances are present. Introducing liquids, food particles, or tobacco smoke can affect the unit’s operation.

The sugar alcohols commonly found in foods are sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, isomalt, and hydrogenated starch hydrolysates. So, it’s wise to look at the ingredients of things that you put in your mouth if you don’t do that already. It’s smart to rinse thoroughly with water after having any type of alcohol in your mouth that could trick the device into thinking you were out drinking alcohol. Golden State Interlock’s ignition interlock device has a cutoff level of BAC 0.025 which means you will not get false positives from foods or drinks with slight levels of alcohol.
